Keep young minds active!

Summer is a great time for children to pick up skills and knowledge they might not have time for during the school year. Our summer academies equip students with skills they’ll need to succeed both in school and in life. Our summer academies balance focused academics and play-based learning to keep summer education fun!

How it works

Our summer academies run Monday – Friday and are broken up into three 3-week sessions. We offer programming from 10:00-1:30, and provide before and after care for working parents. Classes are 1.5 hours long with a 30-minute supervised lunch break between classes. Students are welcome to enroll in one or both classes in a session.

Our Location

Our summer academy will be held at Elliott Elementary School on Cortner Ave in Cerritos, Ca.

Keep reading all summer long!

Teachers and experts agree the best thing kids can do to stay strong academically over the summer is read. Summer reading keeps minds active and helps develop literacy that will help students in every stage of school. High literacy is also a core skill kids need to succeed in the Common Core curriculum. That’s why we start every morning with Reading Club! Your children will be placed in small groups and read through a fun, engaging book together. Students practice reading aloud, participate in discussions, complete novel study activities, and host reader’s theater to keep summer learning fun. At the end of each three week session, your child comes home with a completed Novel Study workbook and a copy of the book to keep.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Improve reading fluency through reading aloud
  • Strengthen reading comprehension
  • Track characters, plot, and theme
  • Improve written and verbal communication skills
  • Group discussions teach critical thinking and listening
  • Practice creativity and public speaking skills in Reader’s Theater

Offered for Session 1 – June 17 to July 5

Summer is a time for science!

In our 3-week STEM camp, students build projects every week and use them to experiment with principles of physical science. We build an electric racecar and explore motors, speed, friction, and motion. Students assemble model rockets to learn about gravity and chemical reactions. Creating a solar fan teaches students about light, heat and renewable energy sources. Through these hands-on experiences, students gain practical knowledge about the world around them and will better understand the concepts they learn in science at school. At the end of our three week session, your child will come home with a Scientific Journal full of their experiments. We also host an end-of-session Science Fair where you can come and see your child’s latest discoveries!

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn concepts of motion, gravity, light, chemical reactions and more
  • Building projects teaches practical engineering skills
  • Learn and use the scientific method of observation, hypothesizing, and testing
  • Real life experience with physical science principles that will pave the way for classroom learning

Public Speaking Club

Offered for Session 2 – July 8 to July 26
$195/ three-week session + $5 materials fee

Gain the confidence to speak up!

In today’s world, being an expert isn’t enough. To be successful, you must be able to present yourself and your work with confidence. Our Public Speaking Camp starts off with improv so kids have tons of fun while learning to think quickly and speak in front of others. We then move into skits and poetry recitations, so students learn to effectively deliver lines and passages they’ve memorized. Finally, we teach students to write and present their own persuasive speeches, so they can proudly present their own words to an audience. In addition to leaning to speak better, students walk away with improved skills in memorization and persuasion that will help them perform better at school. At the end of the session, we invite you to attend our Speech Day where our students will present their hard work and deliver their persuasive speeches!

Learning Outcomes:

  • Gain confidence speaking in front of others
  • Learn to present ideas clearly and logically
  • Improv teaches quick-thinking and creativity
  • Skits & poetry recitations improve memorization skills
  • Learn the rhetorical skills of pathos, ethos and logos
  • Improved persuasion skills help with opinion and argumentative writing

Creative Writing Club

Offered for Session 3 – July 29 to August 16
$195/ three-week session + $5 materials fee

Unleash your creativity!

Students in the Creative Writing Camp will practice writing and coming up with fresh, creative ideas through fun daily activities. We’ll learn about key story elements such as setting, character, plot and theme. Through creative quick writes, students learn to power through writer’s block and come up with great ideas more quickly. Group stories teach students how to collaborate creatively and make their stories better by working together. Not only will your children grow as creative writers, but they’ll also learn to be better readers as they understand the components that make up a story. At the end of our 3 week session, students come home with a Published Collection of our class’s writing and a Writing Journal full of their writing and story ideas.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand story elements including character, setting, plot, and theme.
  • Learn characteristics of genre, such as sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, mystery and more
  • Ability to generate good ideas quickly
  • Improved reading comprehension through a stronger understanding of story structure
  • Grow in creative thinking and problem solving
  • Heavy emphasis on writing games to keep kids engaged and having fun while writing

Additional Care

Offered all three sessions

As a working parent, we know you need a safe, fun place for your child to stay while you’re at work. With our additional care options, we provide a safe, fully-supervised space for your kids to play, learn and relax during their summer break.

During the morning we have indoor play time. We provide board games, card games, and books for kids – they are welcome to bring their own toys and books/comics as well! We ask that students only bring toys they are comfortable sharing with others.

During after-care, we do snack time (students must bring their own snacks) and outdoor play where kids can play on the playground, play basketball and handball, and participate in a structured game (capture the flag, etc). Fridays are water play days! So be sure to pack a change of clothes and a towel.
